I’m a Merseyside based Photographic Artist and Educator. I have nearly 30 years experience of producing public realm artwork, gallery based art and socially engaged art. My work focuses on people and place (including the spaces they occupy) and how communities define themselves. I have a passion and a desire to connect and collaborate with people who are usually excluded from participating in and producing art.
Research and collaboration is a key element to my work with emphasis placed on re-connecting the past with the present. Clients have included Halton Borough Council, Kensington Regeneration and Marks & Spencer.
Socially Engaged Art Practice
Over the last 27 years, I’ve acquired extensive experience of collaborating with people and communities, including people experiencing homelessness, offenders (including ex-offenders), refugees, people with drug and alcohol addiction, individuals with complex mental health needs and the elderly. Clients have included Asylum Link, Emmaus UK, Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust Hospital, Liverpool Waves of Hope, METAL, Open Eye Gallery, Riverside Housing, Save the Children and The Salvation Army.
For 10 years (2000-10) I lived and worked (art residencies) in the Kensington New Deal for Communities (NDC) area of Liverpool. The NDC was the Government’s strategy to tackle deprivation in some of the poorest areas in the country. The main aim was reduce the gap, in terms of deprivation and inequality, between those areas and the rest of the country. One such residency (duration 10 years) entailed delivering art and photography workshops on an alternative educational programme, engaging young people (aged 13-15 years old) who were excluded from mainstream schooling.
Between 2012-2023, I was employed by Crisis Merseyside as a Photography Tutor. I delivered weekly sessions at various homeless shelters in Merseyside. During lockdown in the UK (from March 2020), face to face sessions were cancelled and I delivered weekly photography online sessions via Zoom.
