A series of public artworks showcasing a selection of the participant’s memories, stories and photographs from their family albums where displayed at three sites in the heart of the town centre. It was beautiful to see these private moments, usually only seen/heard by family/friends become accessible to the public. Shoppers/visitors found them to be very engaging and could relate to the memories/stories. They where displayed on shop fronts at three locations in Prescot Town Centre; 4-6 Eccleston Street, the former Hamlets shop and the former Lloyds Bank. For most of the participant’s, this is the first time their photographs were seen beyond family members. It was established in 1884 and has also been known as Prescot and Prescot Town. They compete in the Northern Premier League Division One West and play their home games at the Joseph Russell Stadium. They are a member of the Liverpool County Football Association. The "Cables" in their name came from the largest local employer in Prescot, British Insulated Cables, which was founded in 1890 as the British Insulated Wire Company, and later became part of British Insulated Callender's Cables. Prescot Wire Works were founder members of the Liverpool County Football Combination league and were runners three times in the years leading up to the First World War. At the back end of 2018 the club were given a 99-year lease by Knowsley Council, who had taken ownership of the ground following on from issues with the previous owners going into administration during the financial crash in 2008. Vicky, became the Kit Manager in 2019 and the First Team Caterer in 2022. Both roles as a volunteer. © Tony Mallon https://imageproxy.viewbook.com/32405/60bc87b242a3a32746b07505e18b0b00_hd.jpg Manager, Waterfields Bakery, Eccleston Street, Prescot During the general strike of 1926, Alice Waterfield set up a small bakery in Mather Lane, Leigh, selling pies and confectionery to the local factory workers. As the reputation grew, so did business and soon her husband Albert joined Alice to work in the bakery. He left his job as a coal miner, after taking his qualifications in baking at Manchester Technical College where he studied at night after a day spent down the pit. As trade flourished so did the involvement of the next generation. Daughter Hilda supervised the cake decorating department and later moved on to retail supervision. Albert jnr, who joined the firm in 1956 after army service, was later to become Managing Director in 1961, following the death of his father. In 1984 the business had expanded to such an extent that there was a requirement to move the bakery again, this time to Manchester Road, Leigh. It was around then that the third generation, Richard and John Waterfield became involved in the management of the business having spent several years both in the U.K. and Europe developing skills in the art of baking. Today they have 36 shops across the North West of England. The shop in Eccleston Street opened in the early 1980’s. In 1996, Waterfields purchased the sweet shop, Sweet Emporium next door to enlarge their premises. Sister company is the Imaginarium Theatre. The bistro located on the Piazza of Market Place, has been designed with the purpose of bringing creative culture and community spirit to the former hive of activity that once was Market Place. Through their sister company, they bring a wide variety of exciting events to the Piazza with the use of a brand new Story Tent: programming year round events for all of the family. Aron is a waiter at the bistro and an actor. Before ordination she was a secondary school Religious Education teacher and youth worker. Sometimes people ask me what my favourite part of this beautiful, 800-year-old town centre church is. There are, indeed, so many striking features, from the Norman font to the stained glass windows, but my answer often takes people by surprise: "the top of the church tower". The Parish Church exists for the whole town: every corner, every person, and so many stories are interwoven with this sacred place, where people have gathered at the highest and lowest points of life.   It's why I love the top of the tower, as it's the vantage point from which you can see every part of the town: the shiney and new; the bustling; the quiet; the forgotten, and it reminds me that this church was built for, and belongs to, every corner.  As this photograph was taken, we spoke about the top of the tower being a place of prayer. There has been a lot of fear amongst residents this year, with talks of crime and, only this week, news of gunshots fired. i Sometimes I come up here and lament the sense of pain and fear that people are experiencing- offering t to God in prayer. At other times I gaze out and dare to dream of a bright future: of hope restored and healing for the broken. My prayer throughout is "God, help me to see this town and its people through your eyes".  Knowsley's only Grade I listed building which is hundreds of years old is one of Merseyside's finest churches. Located on Church Street in the heart of the town centre, the fascinating building was officially listed in 1951. The church is also over 400 years old, with some artifacts dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. They also create celebration cakes for every occasion. First opened on Leyland Street in 2015. He opened the restaurant and ran it for 30 years. In that time it has become a favourite eating place for local people and George has become a much loved character in the community. Michael born with Down’s Syndrome, overcame many medical problems in his early years and achieved, through mainstream education, many qualifications in IT, Catering & GCSE Art with hobbies including Scouts, dancing and all sports and a Bronze medal for Boccia earned at the Special Olympics, to name just a few. However, in his early twenties, he was diagnosed with a rare condition affecting Down’s syndrome, Atlanto-Axial Instability (spinal cord compression) which required surgery. Although a major set back in his mobility and ability, his rehabilitation programme required learning to walk again and renewing his interests in his hobbies, mainly art and also learning photography. He enjoys being part of the Photo Group. Currently, he attends Al’s ARC daycare centre at 40 Eccleston St, Prescot. He was their first member. The centre was set up by two Mums of young adults with Learning Disabilities who wanted to provide a much needed daycare centre within the local community. From an empty disused former NatWest Bank, at the heart of Prescot Town Centre, with amazing help and local support, a hub has been created and membership growing from the original three, now supporting forty five members. This year they produced an adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew in the Sir Ken Dodd Performance Garden at the Shakespeare North Playhouse. The Young Shakespeare Company focus on outdoor performance, giving young people the opportunity to explore Shakespeare from an actor's perspective. © Carol Southward https://imageproxy.viewbook.com/32405/bcd39aba5ba2ba82cb474f74f5d3655c_hd.jpg The Dance Shop Cath O’Grady, started dancing at the age of 2, some 42 years ago. She went on to dance professional, teach for a number of years and then took over the dance school. She has seen many of her students over the years go on to dance professionally and/or go into teaching as a professional career. Students who danced with them are now bringing their children back to them. For many years they were based just a short distance away in Huyton and were lucky enough to move into their own premises above the shop in 2021.   Her love of dance took her along a secondary route and into retail in 2015, bringing the very best dance wear and accessories to their local dancers via The Dance Shop and more recently nationally and internationally via their online shop. The shop opened in April 2015 in Prescot Shopping Centre as a small unit and grew into the premises they have today on 69-71 Eccleston Street in January 2020.   There is a massive dance industry across Liverpool and the UK and they are delighted to be able to provide a first class service to allow dancers to become the best version of themselves. © Paula Prescott https://imageproxy.viewbook.com/32405/fde5d5a4bd0218f8ba61f90dfc724ada_hd.jpg Open Eye Gallery Exhibition The project resulted in three exhibitions were only a small selection of the participant’s work is shown. This snap shot of contemporary Prescot town centre was co-produced by it’s residents. Who better to capture the essence of a place they know so well. Even though the project has finished, the group are going to continue to meet regularly to capture their town centre. They see the value and importance of creating an archive from their work for future generations to access. I’m so proud by the quality of work that has been produced and how the participant’s have embraced capturing their town centre. For most, they would not even consider themselves a serious or amateur photographer - just starting out. This collaboration and co-produced work has shown how the ‘High Street’ has evolved yet still gives a sense of identity and pride. Care was devised and produced during lockdown in the UK, which began on 23 March 2020 in an unprecedented step to attempt to limit the spread of coronavirus. It formed part of the Heart of Glass Home Work micro commissions which engaged artists during lockdown. Exhibited as part of LOOK/15, Liverpool’s international photography festival and at the Unseen Photo Festival, Amsterdam in 2015. “Tony Mallon’s series ‘Homeless’ is a strikingly original exploration of the hostels provided for those who do not have somewhere to call home. These strong graphic images reveal in-between spaces: part office, part budget hotel, part social club, part counselling room. Un-peopled stage sets organised for lives in disorder. Liverpool Waves of Hope was part of the Big Lottery’s national Fulfilling Lives Programme with the primary aim of influencing systems change for adults with multiple & complex needs. They provided intensive support for adults with needs in at least three of the following areas: homelessness, reoffending, substance misuse & mental health. The workshops gave the participants the opportunity to learn the basics of digital photography and for many it was the first time they had used a digital camera. The project explored their achievements and aspirations and sought to see if these were linked to place of birth. Over several months, I worked with the residents on aspects of photography and digital imaging such as portraiture, visual literacy, photomontage and editing. This resulted in a photo zine being produced on the issue of social mobility, which was displayed as part of LOOK/11, Liverpool’s first International Photography Festival in 2011. I worked directly with 14 clients over a seven week period to develop and produce a photographic and art zine, built in response to the question ­ ‘My Journey’. There are also 15 self-contained apartments on site. With a range of services and support on site, the apartments give residents the best opportunity to succeed. I worked directly with twenty seven clients over a ten week period to develop and produce a photographic and art zine, built in response to the question ­ ‘what brings you joy?. All the photographs, taken by the members and their stories have been creatively put together by them to form Home, a photozine, which was shown as part of the LOOK/13 international photography festival in Liverpool. Crisis are a national charity for people experiencing homelessness. The Whitechapel Centre is the leading homeless and housing charity for the Liverpool region. They work with people who are sleeping rough, living in hostels or struggling to manage their accommodation. They are committed to helping people find and maintain a home and learn the life skills essential for independent living. The New Beginnings Project provides members with a menu of formal and informal learning opportunities/activities with a long term aim of supporting clients into mainstream learning, volunteering and employment. Participants explored locations across Liverpool and the sessions gave the participants the opportunity to increase their confidence, motivation and learn the basics of digital photography. This was delivered in an informal relaxed environment and for some it was the first time they had used a digital camera. The Bond Board is a Greater Manchester homeless charity, established in 1993. Their vision is a safe, accessible, just and sustainable private rented housing sector for people on low incomes. They are committed to listening and learning from the people they support. This project has enabled them to reflect on the talents, strengths, skills and resilience of their service users and to appreciate the value of the friendships and sense of community they have created at their fortnightly ‘Quid’s In’ sessions. The first phase of the Zine and Heard Art Project began in June 2021. Weekly art sessions (face to face) were delivered over a twenty week period, which offered the Bond Board’s service users the opportunity to participate and develop skills in; visual art, smart phone film making, photography, music and magazine design. The sessions also offered the opportunity for the participants to share their stories and experiences of life during lockdown.
